It's either the 50mm f/1.2 or 50mm f/1.8. This lens falls in the middle with good quality and good price.

This lens is one of the best I own!!!!!

This lens has a wide open aperture at 1.4 allowing for great nighttime shots. The only downside is it won't zoom. It's worth every penny regardless.

"A Perfect Lens for Everyday and More" 2009-11-23
By missgrundy (San Francisco, CA)
This is simply a fabulous lens -- it's almost never off my Canon 40D. I looked at the 1.8, which came highly recommended because of the price, but then I noticed comments that said it would probably last a year, because of the build. So I looked at the 1.4. This lens works well in so many conditions, it's sharp, has beautiful DOF, I just can't say enough about it. It's my first prime lens -- like a lot of people, I was attracted to the zoom feature of other lenses. But even though with this lens you have to zoom yourself, don't let that stop you at all.

I'm an intermediate level photographer. I highly recommend this lens for anyone around my level.

 "Favourite lens" 2009-11-20
By Lost in light
For a long time I had the 1.8 for use on my XTi, I finally made the move up to full frame and the 50/1.8 somehow did not sit right. I was slowly building up a trinity of fast primes, one wide, one telephoto and one normal and felt that the 50/1.8 lagged behind my 28/1.8 and 85/1.8 so I decided to take the plunge on the 50/1.4... I have never looked back. In general the reviews are right, shot at 1.4 it is not razor sharp, it is acceptable but does not capture jaw dropping detail, so I only shoot at this aperture when I am trying to feed as much light to the sensor as possible, but shot stopped down just a 1/3 of a stop to f1.6, it starts to sing.

On full frame this lens really shines, wide enough to get lots of the subject in, but long and fast enough that the DOF can be used to pick out points of interest or guide the viewers eyes. For full length portraits many people comment on the '3D' quality the images have caused by the out of focus areas in front and behind subjects. I love this lens for travel shots, the combination of wide and fast means you can get inventive with the 'tourist' shot having an out of focus person gazing out over a vista, or their face sharp and the famous landmark being a creamy but recognizable bokeh blur in the background. On a crop frame camera it would be too long for such a shot.

So what does the 50/1.4 give you over the 50/1.8 because that is the main quandary people face. It is noticeably better built, the autofocus is much better, you get that 2/3rd extra stop (which counts for a lot in DOF if not that much in light gathering), the 1.4 is sharper at equivalent f-stops (i.e. the 1.4 is sharper than my 1.8 when both are shot at f2). The con is it is 3-4 times the price.

All in all the proof was in the pudding and I do not regret one bit getting this lens and am very happy with it, if I was still on a crop frame however I am not so sure I would be.

 "Got a good copy" 2009-11-20
By H. Tu
Got a really nice copy. at f/1.4, it is still sharp unlike the others I've seen which is soft. I am happy I got this over the 50mm 1.8. The body of the 1.4 is really well built. Nice solid feeling. I debated on getting this or the 1.8, and decided to get the 1.4 based on its built. Its 3x more, but I think its worthed it. Read too many reviews on the 1.8, the lens just breaks apart after a few use. I picked up a lens hood to protect and reduce flare.

"Does not work with T1i" 2009-11-27
By Brittney Raine (Philadelphia)
I bought this remote thinking it was a cheap way to get more out of my T1i, however it doesn't even work with my camera. I did everything I was supposed to do (set my camera to remote shooting mode, aim the remote at the infrared sensor, etc) and it fired twice, then stopped. Fortunately I discovered that a Canon RC-1 remote I had for an old EOS ElanIIe works for my T1i. I'm definitely returning the Opteka RC-4.

"Great simple remote shutter release for 5D Mark II" 2009-11-14
By Dave (Texas)
The product was delivered quickly and it works perfectly with my Canon 5D Mark II.

This is a very simple, cost effictive, wireless (infrared) remote shutter release. Like a cable release, but better because it is not physically connected to the camera and therefore can't cause it to move at all.

This is not as sophisticated as some of the RF remotes, but it is simple and very thin, and inexpensive, and does not require anything to be fitted to the camera.

Canon's equivalent infrared remote works equally well, but costs twice as much and is much buliker and less comfortable in the pocket.

 "Thanks to your reviewers" 2009-11-11
By E.A. R.S. (California)
I just received my remote yesterday, and couldn't figure out how to use it. I'm an extreme novice with my new T1i(my first SLR), and the instructions that came with the remote were next to useless. Thanks to you reviewers, especially A. Beckett (I copied / printed your instructions to keep), - it seems to be a relatively simple process to set it up. It will also eliminate my "camera shake".

I bought this remote because of the low cost - these camera accessories can really add up fast. Thankfully, I got a good price on my camera!

 "Works with T1i, but...." 2009-11-11
By Garren E. Tooker
Short, sweet and to the point...

The RC-4 works fine with the Canon T1i, no complaints there. However the instructions that came with the remote are useless. Sorry, but it is the manufacturer's responsibility to provide accurate instructions for the products they claim to support. At any rate if it weren't for kind reviewers like Bojan Tunguz below who posted an update on how to make the RC-4 work with this family of cameras, I probably would have tossed this unit in the spare parts bin. That's why three stars.

Incidentally the T1i programs exactly the same as the XSi in regard to the remote. Please see Bojan's post below for further directions. Thank you!

"Good battery, but you may as well get the Bag kit." 2009-10-11

The battery itself is a commodity and runs up to $[...] bucks, so you may as well get the Canon Rebel EOS (or your model) bag kit with Battery and filter. It cost at minimum $[...], but the bag is waterproof and durable. I knew a secondary battery would be needed, but after checking the prices and realizing I need a bag it was a no brainer.

A dramatic, eye catching photo can mean dramatic profits. Getting a well exposed photo is extremely important. Photographers often turn to a flash to help light the scene. The problem is that flash can cause harsh reflections or glare spots or create deep shadows that distract viewers. This little, portable universal external flash diffuser will prevent those problems when using a flash. Simply put the unit over the camera's flash, point and shoot. The light will be softened and your photos will be well exposed, without the harsh glare spots.

By DS (USA)
Very nice for the price. It is easy to store and to set-up. I have not used it long enough to comment on the products overall durability, but I have had it for several weeks and it is holding up pretty well. The unit is moderating the light from my 430EX II flash and my pics. are looking better. I would say this item fits a niche, there are times when an omni-bounce unit would work and times when this soft-box unit are needed, so plan on obtaining both. Naturally, if you do a lot of studio work then you have other options, but for field work, assuming you have no portable light units, this Opteka unit is a cheap, helpful addition to your arsenal.

After having it for a couple of days, I can say that the image quality on just the auto shots are amazing. I bought the book for "dummies" for the xs to help with the advanced exposure options. But for now the auto is damn good. Then again I'm coming from a point and shoot.

I debated on getting this or the XSi, and went with this. It's 100 bucks cheaper, and this was my first DSLR. I didn't need the bigger screen or the extra MP. What I don't like about this camera is the fact it won't accept a wireless shutter remote. Other than that, I am happy with my first DSLR. If you were to get a DSLR just to replace your point and shoot or your first DSLR, this is your camera.

"Not a bad starter DSLR" 2009-11-15
By Monkey Poo
I owned a Nikon D40 and used it heavily for six months last year. I wanted to try Canon just to see what it was like. I'll compare to the D40 as I remember it:

Pros:

* Great image quality, low noise even at ISO 800, nice bokeh, sharp -- seems to me to be better image quality than the D40 (newer sensor and processor maybe?)

* Nice features the D40 doesn't have like exposure bracketing, white balance bracketing, sensor cleaning

* More physical buttons than the Nikon, so you can set e.g. ISO or white balance without going through menus

* More auto-focus points

* Feels really light weight

Cons:

* Menu system is fine, maybe better than Nikon's, but the controls just aren't as good as Nikon's. Especially as a left-hander, having almost all the buttons on the right felt so weird.

* Feels cheaper, not as good a grip, too smooth. The rough pattern feel that other cameras has is much nicer to grip.

* Noisier auto focus, sounds like grinding gears, it's awful

* Live view mode is way too hard to access, like Canon was embarrassed by it (but I don't use liveview anyway, so no big deal)

(I returned the camera and bought a Nikon D3000 on Amazon instead. The ergonomics was a huge issue for me.)

My suggestion is to go to a physical store, try out the cameras in your hands and with your eyes (viewfinder) to see which *feels* right, then buy on Amazon. :-)

I just wanted to make a small review for the average Joe to read, mainly cause I know all the "camera guy" lingo and myself would rather just have a point black "Yes" or "No".

So in a word, "Yes". If you're thinking about grabbing this camera, do it, especially with the kit lens, it's a very nice lens for a kit anyway; you'll be able to do a lot with just that lens alone.

That's without touching in the camera, it does almost everything it's big brothers can do, with a lower price tag! So yes, buy it, use it, love it.

I do.

I am an amateur in the field of digital photography.I bought the speedlite because I found the flash on my Canon 350D was too slow for action shots. I am pleased to say I found the speedlite matched all of the hype in the reviews I read of it. I have had mixed successes in its use. This is no reflection on the speedlite rather it is my pushing and exceeding its boundaries. I look forward in continuing experimenting with it knowing that once I upgrade my camera I may have even more positive results.

Have owned a 550 EX for five years or so, and this 580 EXII is a great improvement. Like the metal foot, the swiveling head (both ways) and it seems to be more accurate than my 550. Would highly recommend it, except for the price. But I guess you get what you pay for. Shot a job using ST e2 and umbrella and it did a great job. Using with my old 550EX as both slave (with ST-E2) and as primary flash with 550 slaved. Does a good job.

Use it primarily with a 5D Mk2.

I've been lusting for Canon's top-of-the-heap speedlight flash and am very happy to have waiting for the best. The 580EXII puts out a massive amount of light and recovers in the blink of an eye. The instruction manual is only so-so but you can search the internet for more details.

I'd give it another star if the Amazon price hadn't gone up so much in the last few months (in this tough economy). Still the flash is built to last and even the case is rugged enough to last a long, long, time.

I have only just begun to use this flash, but found it useful right out of the box. While I'm still learning about lighting, the automatic TTL with this is a boon, but it's also great to be able to make adjustments to the automatic settings to compensate for moments I want more or less light.

I love the way the head swivels in many directions, which means I can bounce it off ceilings or walls or whatever. I also got the stofen omni bounce, which is a very nice addition for not a lot of money, and it has gotten some use indoors with family pictures.

I can't compare this to off-brand TTL flashes, but I can say I like this flash and highly recommend it.

This is not exactly a review but a first hand exprience of this amazing flash.

The 430EX II is a perfect match for my 50D. Lens used was a Canon EF-S 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 standard zoom lens only for this occation.

I took 1,053 indoor shots on a set of fresh batteries on this flash (still have plenty of energy left) and it never failed me. Not even once. Some of my shots were in 2 to 5 bursts and were about 25ft away from the subject (due to the nature of the event. The exposures was just right on. I used mutiple camera settings using only the pre-set scenes.
