"Wonderful frame, only 1 concern" 2009-12-29
By A. Golden (Madison, WI)
After ordering this picture frame for both sets of parents for Christmas we were pleasantly surprised with the value we found in the Opteka frame. It is huge and the picture quality is great! We couldn't believe how great everything looked. The frame is a nice neutral warm brown frame, and it comes with a pretty easy to use remote. We put pictures on an SD memory card right away and when we installed the memory card the frame played it right away which was great, HOWEVER we could not figure out how to randomize them from the SD card- they went in order. I spent a good 45 minutes trying to figure out how to make this work with no luck. I saw another reviewer say the same thing. I renamed the files in Windows which allowed the order to be more random on the memory card but FYI the SD card will play in order. That would not deter me from buying the frame again (I think we might buy another one actually for my house) but it's something nice to know. Other than that we could not be more happy!

 "Beautiful But Terrible!" 2009-12-27
By MC
The picture size, resolution, and quality is fantastic. The firmware and internal memory are garbage.

We purchased this as a gift and we wanted to pre-load it with photos. What happened next was similar to what has been described in some other reviews.

The first batch of photos that we put on it worked fine. However, when we tried to add more photos, some of the files became corrupted. We tried loading again and just when it looked like they were all OK and going to work, all of the files names were turned to nonsense. The file names had strange symbols in them and there was no rhyme or reason to them. When we tried to change the file names or delete some of the files, permission was denied.

The only solution was to format the internal drive, erasing everything. Then we could go back and start over, loading a batch of photos, which would work. The instant that we tried adding more photos, corruption. It also corrupted files when we tried to copy over from a USB drive or memory card. It seemed to do fine showing pictures from the memory card directly.

We thought about keeping it and just re-formatting the drive every time we want to add more photos, but thought that if it has this problem, what other problems will appear?

"Careful - Buy With These Caveats" 2009-12-26
By K. Culp (Iowa City, IA)
I've had this a grand total of 7 hours, some concerns that I will explain. Overall, for the price you can't match it in department stores. BUT, here are some things to think about.

Mine flickers the first 30-45 seconds after turning it on. I can't figure out why, maybe the operating system booting up? Anyway, it soon disappears and the pics look great.

I think people are loading up large picture files, maybe 12 mega-pixels, that is why we see low rankings. If you load these it will play the file, but it does go slow. I recommend doing a batch conversion and keeping the files below 500K. It really doesn't impact all that much on picture quality, you only need about 70 dots per inch (DPI) for an LCD screen. A simple way to do batch conversion is a free photo editor called IFRANVIEW.

Playing music will slow it down, by that I mean the transitions take longer between slides. Not a biggie, but does tax the system a little bit.

The cheap plastic stand is nearly useless, I plan to use gorilla glue to make sure it doesn't fall apart. Really poor quality, but not a deal killer.

Cord comes out on the side, wish they would make it exit on the very back.

Format your SD card or USB to FAT32 if you are a windows user! THIS IS NOT IN THE MANUAL. I had tried an NTFS formatted SD card and it took me about an hour to figure out why it wouldn't read it.

Lastly, organize your pics into folders. For some reason just dumping them in the internal memory slows it down too.

Anyway, hopes this helps people. The fit and finish of the front of the frame is fine. NO DEAD PIXELS on mine, excellent screen quality. The viewing angle is a "little tight" but not bad.

Can anyone comment here on the "flickering" when turning on the device?

Thanks.

 "Ruined my Christmas...defective frame" 2009-12-22
By A. Nader (San Francisco, CA)

I just got my frame in the mail and am preparing for Christmas. Spent two hours and could not get the frame to work. I am convinced that it is defective. The directions are not terribly helpful - for something that costs over $100, the directions are made for a cheap item. Reall poor product quality - DO NOT BUY THIS ONE.

 "Irritated with this product" 2009-12-21
By Tania Milholland (Silt, CO USA)
After ordering and receiving this frame I was pleased with the quality of the picture display and decided to order two more as gifts. From the begining I was never crazy about the ease of use of the software but since I loved the size and quality of the picture display I decided to overlook the fact that the software is not exactly user friendly. Now I'm just irritated. I have had to send back two defective units that were defective right out of the box and possibly a third that has stopped working after it was already set up and working fine. I understand all about human error but now it seems that this product and maybe the Opteka brand is just junk. They have no contact info on their website so I can't even get a tech to help troubleshoot with me until they decide to contact me. That's just ridiculous!

"Good Value for a Fine Lens" 2009-12-03
By F. Ehorn (Marana, Az USA)
Not having the change to spring for the Canon "L" equivalent, I did my research and decided this would more than suffice. Having used it for some recent photos, I can say it was a good decision. Build quality seems quite good and the zoom mechanism has just the right feel. Sharpness at normal aperatures is very good and even at f2.8 is not too soft on my Canon 20D. Should make a good 'walkabout' lens and even a credible portrait lens at 60mm+ (although it is hard to beat the portraits taken with my 50mm f1.4). There is a little autofocus searching under dimmer light conditions, but not bad and certainly not a problem for normal landscape photos that I like to take. Comes with a short hood, unlike many Canon lenses. My first Tamron. Nice job Tamron!

 "Great Lens" 2009-11-18
By Jacquelyn A. Broering (coldwater, Ohio)
This is my first "real" lens and have just started taking my own pictures of my children vs. taking them to a professional photographer. In experimenting with the kit lens vs, this lens, I have found that the wider aperature lets me capture more pictures in lower lighting than the kit lens will allow (without a flash). There really is a difference in quality between this lens and the kit lens.

There's really nothing much to say about this product. Despite it being "no-name" brand of battery, it lasts just as long as my official Canon battery that came with the camera. And at a fraction of the price, you can't get much better this (until it explodes or something).

 "Cheap price, cheap battery" 2009-10-29

I suppose for about the price of one Canon battery you could get enough of these to last as long. They are cheap, and it shows. I bought on for a backup, and it lasted about one day. My Canon battery lasts for 3+ days. (Not using live view on either)

It's fine for a backup battery, but don't count on it!

I would recommend it because it's cheap, but not for anything else. If your looking for long life, go for a factory brand, but if you don't mind changing batteries often, go for it....

I recently purchased my 1st canon SLR digital camera and needed something to keep it in. I was searching the stores first before coming to Amazon, but for the price this bag is way worth picking up on Amazon. This same bag sells for a lot more in a retail store that carries canon SLR cameras. It's great for storing extra lenses and parts for the camera. Good construction that seems it will last quite a while. I would recommend this bag to others.

I purchased this bag when I purchased my camera and had no idea how big this bag was! It's about twice the size I need! It's almost embarrassing to carry around with my camera and two lenses. It's inconvenient because of the size and I will most likely purchase a bag half the size. I do not recommend this to anyone new to photography with only 1-2 lenses. This bag holds a lot and is quite a bit to lug around.

The lens covers an angle of view equivalent to that of a 28mm wideangle to a 419mm ultra telephoto with just one lens, letting the user capture once-in-the-lifetime images of panoramic landscape images or close-up pictures of children smiling, without having to get too close to the subject and without having to change lenses.

"Great Lens with a very small drawback: Does not transfer distance information to the flash" 2009-12-20
By D. Desai (CA, USA)
I got this lens as a generic carry-everywhere lens for taking on vacations, and it has done its job well. I won't repeat the other reviews, but overall its a very good purchase and I 100% recommend it.

There is one minor drawback on using this lens, as with most other non-canon lenses: It does not transmit distance information to the camera's flash. If you have a camera that uses E-TTL2 flash metering, which uses this distance information as one of the parameters to determine the flash intensity, the camera will not receive it.

Cameras use the distance information only when using direct flash (not bounced), so if you don't use the flash directly, you are fine. Also, distance is only one small part of the calculation, so the E-TTL2 function will still perform well without distance information.

I generally use a different lens when indoors with a external flash, so this is not a big deal for me. However, if this will be your primary lens, its something you might want to consider.

 "First non-kit lens delivers" 2009-11-17
By J. C. Morris (Denmark)
I took the non-kit route and bought a house and this lens separately. After weeks of searching the web and reading far too many reviews for the perfect all-purpose lens, I couldn't resist the range and price of this lens. An 18-270mm at this price and with such good reviews was hard to pass up. The photos have been phenomenal and the VC (vibration compensation) works better than expected. Aside from a stiff zoom range that has subsided with usage and the occasional lens creep that can be prevented with a lens lock, this lens has been the jewel I'd hoped for and has delivered.

 "Tamron AF 18-270mm" 2009-11-05
By Roger Webb (Londonderry NH)
I recently bought this lens to use on my Rebel XSi after weeks of searching and reviewing various other lenses. The lenses I was originally considering were both Canon, 24-105 f4 IS and 24-70 f2.8. Both over $1000 and undeniably excellent lenses.

However, I'm not a pro photographer, nor do I have (or plan to get) a full-frame camera in the near future. So after much deliberation I went for the Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC, to use on an everyday basis for all eventualities. So far I have been extremely happy with the lens. Yes there is the zoom creep when the lens is pointing down, but there is a lock! I've not experienced slow focus in low light, in fact I've been pretty impressed with its speed.

Image quality, for me, is excellent. The zoom range is fantastic and the VC works extremely well (I've taken some sharp pictures at shutter speeds as low as 1/15 sec!).

This lens also comes with a $[...] rebate, and much to Tamron's credit, I received a check within a couple of weeks (un-like some other rebate offers where I have waited months and had to chase companies constantly. Thanks Adobe!)

So for a keen amateur this lens has proved to be excellent. And for a price of $[...] after rebate I'm pleased I made this choice.

Featuring a new optical system design, the new zoom lens delivers an expanded zoom range with a 24 mm wide-angle focal length, ideally suiting it to digital image sizes, while also maintaining or improving on the outstanding image quality of the superseded model. Moreover, the power of the focusing lens group has been increased to allow a minimum focusing distance of just 0.38 meters, the shortest in its class at the time, throughout the entire zoom range. The new EF24-70mm f/2.8L USM also features a circular diaphragm, to give better background blur, and utilizes only lead-free glass optics in consideration of the environment.

"Canon EF 24-70mm vs. 24-105mm IS: Read this if you are a hobbyist" 2009-11-20
By va1800 (Baltimore, Maryland)
I am a hobbyist and this review is for people like me. What I mean by that is that I take pictures for fun and nobody buys my pictures. I mostly shoot landscape, nature, and portraits of family, friends, and relatives. I will refer to 24-70mm as the 70, and the 24-105mm IS as the 105. I first made the mistake of buying the 70, then I returned it with a hefty restocking fee and bought the 105 - I don't have the slightest regret and I could not be happier. I'm taking my time to write this review so that you can spend your hard earned money wisely. Let's analyze the trade-off between the two:

* Both lenses have excellent build and image quality. So these are not differentiating factors.

* The one and only advantage of the 70 is the one smaller f-stop. For me, this means more blur when I shoot portraits, so this is all good.

* The advantage of 105 over the 70 are as follows:

- You get an extra 35mm, which is 50% more zoom. I like this.

- You get a 3-stop IS. For me, this is a great advantage, because I rarely use tripods and IS saves the day. I would choose the 105 over 70 for the IS alone.

- The 105 is 10 ounces lighter and close to half an inch shorter.

The last part is the most important part: that additional 10 ounces make a heavy lens TOO HEAVY, and that extra length makes a big lens TOO BIG. Carrying the 70 on my 50D was a pain. I can assure you, the 70 is just too heavy to walk around and take pictures for fun. The keyword here is "fun". The 70 is a pain, the 105 is fun. The 105 is still heavy, but not too heavy. It's still big, but not too big. After having the 70 for a few weeks, I lost all my joy for shooting. It just made me very uncomfortable (and I'm 6-foot 2). When I replaced it with the 105, it did make a difference. I enjoy taking pictures now, once again. Pros might like the 70 because they need it for their professional work. But if you're shooting just for fun, stay away from the 70. Again, this is from my point of view as a hobbyist, and this is why I gave the 70 one star.
