Extension tubes are designed to enable a lens to focus closer than its normal set minimum focusing distance. Getting closer has the effect of magnifying your subject (making it appear larger in the viewfinder and in your pictures). They are exceptionally useful for macro photography, enabling you to convert almost any lens into a macro lens at a fraction of the cost while maintaining its original optical quality. The extension tubes have no optics. They are mounted in between the camera body and lens to create more distance between the lens and film plane. By moving the lens father away from the film or CCD sensor in the camera, the lens is forced to focus much closer than normal. The greater the length of the extension tube, the closer the lens can focus. The Kenko Auto Extension Tube Set contains three tubes of different length, a 12 mm, 20 mm, and 36 mm, which can be used individually or in any combination to obtain the desired magnification.Kenko's Auto Focus extension tubes are designed with all the circuitry and mechanical coupling to maintain auto focus and TTL auto exposure.

I have used these tubes for more than a decade now. I have had them on my Rebel G, Elan 7, 20D, 30D, 5D, and 5DmkII. I have shot with lenses ranging from 35mm through 600mm and these tubes have never failed to function flawlessly. That is not to say I have never failed to compose a masterpiece with them, or that I always have as much depth-of-field as I would like when using them, but that is the nature of this type of close-up and macro work, not the fault of the equipment.
I highly recomend reading Jeff Kraus's earlier review so you understand some of the basics about what you are purcasing. They have limitations, but I would be amiss not to recomend these to every photographer who would like to work in Macro. Coupled with good glass these tubes can garner gallery quality fine art. Trust me on that.

I have owned these tubes for almost a year and have really enjoyed using them. These tubes are very well built and attach to both the camera and lens very securely. As other reviewers here have indicated, using these tubes is not quite a substitute for using a macro lens, but it does allow you to get VERY close to your subject and, therefore, is a reasonable substitute at a much lower price point for a dedicated macro lens. I generally use these with my Canon f/1.4 50mm lens, often all three at once, and have captured some excellent close up photos. When I first got these, I was thinking that the longer the lens attached, the closer I could get. I was hoping that attached to my 70-200mm lens I would be photographing the head of an ant and filling the frame. However, that is not really the case, as the longer lenses require a further focal distance (even when using these), which in turn makes the object smaller in the frame when in focus. Using my 50mm gives me my best results, and allows me to still have a decent depth of field for the subject I am photographing. One thing to note-- sadly, use of these tubes is not passed to the EXIF information for your photos.

In short, it is a great product. Perfect for anyone interested in Macro photography. But be aware of what the product is capable of doing. Each ring added between the lens and the camera sensor reduces
1. the minimum focusing distance and
2. the light coming through the lens (almost 1-2 stops of light based on number of tubes used).
This makes the tubes simply an excellent replacement for an expensive macro lens.
With the canon 70-200mm L lens the minimum focusing distance is approximately 2 meters or 10 feet, so this lens is not capable of any macro photography by itself. By using all three tubes you can get as close as 3 inches from the subject.
The build quality of the product is very good and feels solid.
I have only 2 cons to list for the tubes.
1. Does not come with a carrying case or pouch or cleaning cloth. Have to be careful to keep the tubes clean as this is mounted directly on the camera. any dust inside the tubes are sure to reach the sensor.
2. I honestly think these are a bit pricey. Since the tubes have no glass in them I dont see a good reason for them to be $169 (as of 15 Nov 2009). So I dont think the product is of good value considering the cost. I would value them at $100 at best.

I haven't looked back. These are for Macro, they are not extenders, they are extension, quite a bit of difference. I actually attached my 1.4 extender to the camera, then the three tubes to the extender, and then my 50mm lens, and it was really really close. The down side is I don't like my 1.4 extender, I lose sharpness, but thats not a fault of the tubes. The tubes work great, put the lens farther away from the sensor and gives you awesome shots.
NEEDS - good tripod, focusing rails/slides. (Your lens will almost be touching the subject.)

good product and great price. Maybe cuz i'm just an amateur..I can't seem to get non-blurry pictures no matter what I do..maybe it's just difficult to use for me...may consider selling them once I get my real macro lens.
